This doggy treasury is in honor of our dog Mac, who spent his third Christmas with us this year.
I was never much of a dog person until we got Mac. But he has won me over :)

Merry Christmas everyone! I just got an email from Country Ladies Rescue which is the no kill animal rescue where we got our wonderful dog, Mac (the best dog ever!). I always like to scroll through the pets they have up for adoption. You can find a whole list of pets at petfinder.com or click here.

When we were at the shelter, picking out our Mac, there was another dog there that I wanted sooooo bad. Her name was Precious. She was so sweet and excited to see us. I couldn't talk my son into picking her though, because she was a little hyper and he wanted a calm dog. I so wanted Precious to come live with us, but we could only handle one dog.

I'm sad to say that Precious is still at the shelter. I can't believe no one has picked her for a forever home yet. She is adorable and so loving.

So I thought I'd post her pick here and maybe someone out there in cyber world is looking for an extra special dog and will fall in love with her. Click
here for the link to her page.

There are so many pets looking for a good home. They just want someone to love them. Please think about giving Precious or some other homeless pet a home. You'll be glad you did.

Merry Christmas and have a Blessed New Year!

Super quick cookie recipe for the Holidays!!!

Need a super quick cookie recipe for the Holidays? Here is one my DH clipped from a "Hints from Heloise" column a couple of years ago. It has become our favorite cookie recipe.

All you need is:
1 box of cake mix (any flavor)
2 eggs
1/2 cup of vegetable oil
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Mix only the ingredients listed above in a large bowl. Do not follow the actual cake mix recipe! Drop spoonsful of batter onto an ungreased cookie sheet about 2 inches apart. Bake for 8-10 minutes. Cool and eat them up!

I alter this recipe just a bit. I use egg substitute instead of real eggs and I use extra light Olive Oil instead of regular vegetable oil.

We have tried this recipe with almost every flavor of cake mix made - even angel cake. Our favorite is definitely the chocolate fudge cake mixes. And then we add m & m's to the batter, or sometimes chocolate morsels, peanut butter morsels, marshmallows - anything we can find really.

It's even better when you can get the cake mix on sale for super cheap - or even use a coupon.
The cookies taste completely homemade, so it's easy to fool your guests ;)

I wish I had a picture to show but we ate them all :) LOL
Merry Christmas!!

Operation Christmas Box

Every year, my family tries to do something to "give back" during the holidays. We've participated in the local Fireman's Toy Drive for several years now. Most years we also pick an angel off of the Salvation Army Angel tree to buy gifts for - usually a boy who is my son's age at the time, so that it will be more meaningful for him. Sometimes we make donations to certain non-profits that we really like such as Country Ladies Rescue, which is where we got our precious dog, Mac (the best dog EVER) or to the local Humane Society of East Texas.

This year we chose to pack a shoe box with gifts for "Operation Christmas Child" through Samaritan's Purse. I saw a news story on a local channel about a girl who grew up in Russia. She was adopted by an American family when she was 11, but she still remembers the Christmas box that she received while she lived in the orphanage in Russia. She spoke about what a blessing it was for her and all the other children to get something that someone packed just for them and how it made her feel like someone was thinking about her and loved her. The story just made me cry.

So I said to my son and husband, "let's do Operation Christmas child this year". You could choose to pack a box for a girl or boy and of course, my son picked a boy. So we packed 2 shoe boxes. One for a boy aged 5-9 years and one for a boy aged 10-14 years.
We basically followed the guidelines given when buying items to fill the boxes. We bought socks, gum, school supplies, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, hair combs, and toys. For the toys, we bought metal race cars and a small football for the older boy. For the younger boy, we bought small plastic animals, a stuffed animal, and a small football.

We took our boxes to the drop off location on Friday and we were given two sweet, metal, Christmas tree ornaments as a thank you. They had a big semi trailer in the parking lot and it was almost full to the brim with packed boxes.

I don't know when our boxes will be delivered but our thoughts and prayers are with the children who receive them.
Feel free to click any of the above links and donate to these very worthy causes or get yourself a new pet for Christmas!

Thankful for our Blessings

I snagged a treasury today on etsy from my Pink Pear Designs shop. Here is a link to the treasury: http://www.etsy.com/treasury_list.php?room_id=22021 I think it's only good for about 2 days, so click it while you can.
If you click the "somewhere special" link at the top of the page, it will take you to a Carrie Underwood video of the song "So Small", which I love!
Because sometimes, the mountain that we're climbing really is just a grain of sand. But it's hard to see that when you're half way up the mountain.

Catching up!

Oh, where does the time go?

First let me say that the ETC Monday promo for today is "ETC has Secrets". I have 2 secrets in Handmade Whimzy and 2 in Pink Pear Designs. Find the secret, buy the secret and get a free pair of Christmas earrings like the ones listed in my Pink Pear shop! Search on etsy for "teametsytx etc secrets" and see what other participating shops have secrets. You have until midnight tonight! Go - Look!

Also, I have started making my own Pillow boxes. I wanted to offer year round gift wrapping for Pink Pear Designs and I thought pillow boxes would be sweet and still fit into a bubble mailer nicely. So, what to do with all the extra pillow boxes I've been making? Why open up a supply store on etsy, of course.

So today I opened Whimzy Supplies, to sell my handmade pillow boxes and destash supplies.

Wish me luck and check out my new shops!

Red, White, and Blue Festival in Bullard, Texas

Thanks Bullard, Texas and Darlene for organizing such a great festival! I'm from a small town and this really brought back memories of the yearly parade and festival that I grew up with.

Bullard is such an adorable little town. The festival was in celebration of Veteran's day and it was awesome. They had a parade, Miss Armed Forces contest, art contests for the kiddos, an arts and crafts fair, some yummy food and lots of performances by local folks.

My booth did fairly well considering it was a pretty small festival and it was my first time. I met a couple of etsy sellers that I didn't know and saw a couple of sellers that I did know. Betty over at Glassyboop who does awesome fused glass, sold me a really sweet Christmas tree ornament and is making me a custom piece that I will be giving as a gift. Can't say what it is because the giftee might peak and not be surprised.

I also saw AlexiaJean, who is one of my fellow Etsy Texas Crafters. She makes things for wee ones like little bows, dresses, things like that. I know she had a great weekend at the festival and seemed really happy at the end.

One last thing to mention, they had the most wonderful portable potties there that I had ever seen. They had heat and A/C, running water, soap, paper towels and a little bowl of mints. Everyone who used them was soooooo excited. Thanks Darlene for getting us those great toilets!!!!

My clean dog.

Monday, I took my dog, Mac, to get a bath at Petsmart. The groomer just went on and on about how sweet he was. She even gave him this sweet Halloween bandana with spiders on it. Here he is all clean. What do you think?
We've had Mac about 2 1/2 years now. We got him from an animal rescue called Country Ladies Rescue. I highly recommend their organization. Mac is the best dog ever and I'm so glad they took him in so we could find him.

Arts and Crafts Show Booth set up!

My booth setup for the 2008 Rose Festival Arts and Crafts show. This was the first time I had used white table covers. Usually I use black. My husband liked it better this way - he said it made the jewelry stand out better. I'm not sure. It felt like an aweful lot of white.
I'm in the process of finding better displays for my necklaces and I came up with a better packaging method for my bookmarks just this morning.

My sign hanging up in back is handmade by me and it matches my business cards.
Check me out on flicker for more booth pics!

Tyler Rose Garden is gorgeous!

Well, the big Arts and Crafts show this past weekend was pretty much a big dud. The city changed the venue from Bergfeld Park to the Tyler Rose Garden so that it would be closer to the other Rose Festival Festivities. However, whenever you change a venue, it takes several years for the customers to figure out where it moved to, and to follow. So, therefore, no customers. It was so sad.

The venue WAS gorgeous and it was so nice having indoor potties.
Here are some beautiful pics of some of the roses courtesy of The Tyler Rose Garden.

Oh well, the next show will be better and at least the weather was perfect!

Craft Show Tomorrow!

This weekend I will have a booth at the Rose Festival Arts and Crafts in Tyler, Texas. The Arts and Craft show has been moved this year from Bergfeld Park to the Rose Garden. Keep your fingers crossed that we will have a good turnout. Anytime there is a change in venue, I get nervous. Mostly because it usually takes 2-3 years for people to figure out where you've moved to.

We went tonight and set up our tent and carried all the heavy stuff in. We have a good location, right by the entrance and our neighbors that we met seem really friendly.

The Rose Parade starts at 9 a.m. and I'm thinking that we will be really busy once ends as there will be so many people already in the area from the parade. Let's just hope the traffic continues.

I have tons on new stuff for the show - unfortunately, no pics :(
I even have some special lampwork glass rose earrings in red and yellow.

If you're in the area, stop on by and visit!

You've been BOO'D!

I've been thinking about Booing some of my neighbors this Halloween. I've heard and read about doing this and I think it's a really cool idea. We have two neighbors with little bitty kiddos and a retired couple across the street. I think I'll even include a big old doggy bone for the neighbors dog. He needs to be boo'd too, don't ya think?

Have you ever heard of the Boo game? It's where you make up a bag of treats and leave it on your neighbor's doorstep with a little picture of a ghost and a poem. The poem basically says that the person has been boo'd and that they should now boo someone else. However, I don't like the part about making the person feel like they have to boo someone else. I just want to leave treats for some of the neighbors. So I started looking on the internet and found several people who had the same idea as me.

Crazedparent.org has a post about Booing and there was a great poem left in the comments for people who don't want to make the recipient feel as though they have to continue the Booing.
Here's the poem:

The air is cool, the season fall,
soon Halloween will come to all
With Ghosts and goblins, spooks galore
trick-or-treaters at your door
The spooks are after things to do,

in fact, a spook brought this "Boo" to you
The treats that come with this short note
are yours to keep, enjoy them both!
You don't have to spread this cheer

but if you do,
do it to someone you hold dear

Here is how to make a Boo:
Place a goody bag beside the door

include this poem and one thing more
A special treat or something fun,
now your Boo is almost done
Don't sign your name, don't leave a clue

cause that's the magic of a Boo!
Happy Halloween!

This website - organizedchristmas.com has some really great Booing signs and more info about it.

So go out there and BOO someone. This would be a great way to raise the spirits of an elderly person in your neighborhood or anyone else that needs a little fall cheer!

My awesome gift!

As promised, I am posting some pics of the awesome gift I received from Connie of Refabulous for Etsy Texas Crafters 1st ever gift swap. It is a black tote bag with red felted poppies. The inside fabric is black with red poppies and there is even a little pocket and a little ring to hold keys. The sewing is top notch - really beautiful and professional. Connie - you ROCK!

I'm almost afraid to use it because it's so pretty! Ok, all my fellow team members, you can be jealous now!
Ok, funny story, when I received the package and opened it, my little dog Mac, came and started sniffing it and looking at it. Then he ran off and came back with his little stuffed red dog toy in his mouth as if to say, "I like red too, see my red!" I've learned not to leave anything red where he can reach it or he will grab it and claim it for himself. He's such a scamp.

P.S. Connie has several cool totes in her store right now and they are almost as beautiful as mine. LOL

New Store Coming SOON!

I've been working for awhile now on opening a second etsy shop. I have a whole new line of jewelry that I've made and I just don't feel like it fits into Handmade Whimzy. My new line is very romantic. So I wanted to create a place just for it. I'm in the process now of opening the shop and I'll post all the info just as soon as I can.

Etsy Texas Crafters has been accepted to MakerFaire!

Our group, Etsy Texas Crafters, has been accepted to Maker Faire which is taking place in Austin, Texas on October 18 and 19. Our booth will be a make booth, meaning you can stop by and learn how to make something. We will also be passing out "goody bags" with team members business cards and coupons. Signing up to receive our team newsletter will get you a bag with team samples and other goodies. I wish I could be there to help that weekend because it really sounds like fun.

Check out our
Maker Faire Page here.

And as always, you can search "teametsytx" on etsy.com to find all the great listings for members of our talented group!

My new tween line has come to etsy!

I've finally started listing my new tween line of jewelry. I've listed several heart shaped wooden pendants and just today, started listing my new dangly earrings (but not tooooo dangly - just perfect for girls, tweens and young teens). The pendants are not the scrabble tile pendants that have become so popular on etsy. I'm trying to do something alittle different and have different shapes. Right now I have circles and hearts but I'm hoping to add stars and squares.

Here are the just listed today pics!

Handmade Whimzy on the Homepage!

My shop, Handmade Whimzy, was on the homepage of etsy on Monday of this week and I was so excited about it that I forgot to write a blog about it! LOL

My Red Jasper Drop Earrings were the ones featured in the treasury that made the front page.

Here they are:
The fearless leader (Milly of Thistlecraft) of our group, Etsy Texas Crafters, was the one who saw them on the front page and took a screen shot for me. Without her, I would have missed it. Thanks Milly! You ROCK!
I was sooooo excited. As far as I know, that is the first time I have been on the front page. My shop got 15 hearts and the item got 5. Not bad, huh?

New Tween Pendants!

Here is a pic of my new tween pendants that I have been working on for a couple of months now. So far I have made heart shaped and round but I plan to do stars and maybe some other shapes. My purpose was to make something fun, colorful and inexpensive that girls and "tweens" would want to wear. I can customize them for birthday party favors and also do bulk orders.

They were going to debut at the Festival that I had scheduled for yesterday but since it was canceled, I am debuting them here. I will be listing them in my etsy shop in the coming days, so keep your fingers crossed that they will be a hit.

Namaste yoga

Recently, I have taken up Namaste yoga. I did so on doctor's orders and have been at it about 3 weeks now. And suprise, suprise, I'm really enjoying it, although I do still call it pain class sometimes. It's much harder than I ever thought it would be, or maybe I'm just old and stiff. LOL

So to enhance the relaxation part of my yoga class, I bought an eye pillow from Cathie over at Sweetwolf. It is made with flax seed and comes scented with lavender or unscented. Cathie says you can heat the eye pillow up in the microwave and the flax seed retain the heat really well which is great for when you have a migraine. I haven't tried heating it or freezing it yet, but the pillow itself was very soothing to me this morning when I was practicing my yoga.
My new eye pillow is so cute with little sleeping owls on it and it's very well made. Thanks Cathie!

Goody Bags!

I had these cute goody bags all made up in preparation for the Festival, so I thought I'd show you all how cute they came out. I used all the promo, sample and business cards that I had received from my team members of Etsy Texas Crafters. I was able to make 28 bags in all.

I'll have an art show coming up in October, so I'll give them out then. But they really came out great!

Hurricane Ike

Old Hurricane Ike is blowing in this weekend! We have many evacuees in our area from south Texas and I'm sure more are still on the way. Let's all keep our thoughts and prayers with those who are in the path of the Hurricane.

Festival on the Square was canceled this weekend as a result of the proposed bad weather and the need for efforts to be concentrated on helping the evacuees.

I think we'll all be glad when Hurricane season is over!

New Lampwork Beads!

I bought these cool handmade, lampwork beads recently and finally made something with them. They are so modern/retro/cool that I just love them. Unfortunately, I could only get about 10 from the glass artist so I'm going to have to choose carefully how I use them.

This is just one of my many new pieces that I've made to get ready for the Festival on the Square Art show that is now only 1 week away. EGAD!!
All silver used, including beads and wire, is sterling silver. I made the earwires myself. They are listed in my etsy store for $18.
